What is an x‑ray?
An x-ray is a quick and non-invasive medical imaging technique which produces images of the internal structures and tissues in the body, such as bones and organs. X‑rays are often requested to detect bone fractures, dental problems, foreign objects in the body, and to help diagnose various illnesses.
All Alpenglow Australia clinics offer walk-in x-ray with no appointment needed, just bring a valid referral.
You may be asked to stand, sit, or lie down for your x-ray, depending on which part of your body is being examined. Several images are generally required from different angles, and it is important to remain as still as possible while the x-ray is taken. You may also be asked to hold your breath to improve image quality.
Any movement during an x-ray can cause blurring, and you may need to have the images taken again.
A basic x-ray does not require specific preparation.
Please wear loose clothing to your appointment, preferably with no metal. In some cases, you may be required to wear a gown, as some materials and embellishments can show up on an x-ray. You may also be asked to remove objects like watches or jewellery for your scan, so consider leaving any valuables at home.
Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment with your Medicare card and/or concession card, your referral, and any relevant previous scans.
If you have a child aged 6 or under, they must be supervised by an adult other than the patient.
The amount of radiation used in x-ray imaging is typically very small.
Health experts feel the risk to your health from this is very small, and the benefits of the diagnostic information obtained usually outweigh any potential risks. No radiation remains will remain in your body after an x-ray.
If you are pregnant or think you could be pregnant, please let your doctor and our staff know, as x-rays can potentially harm an unborn baby.
A basic x-ray does not require specific after care. After your appointment, you may continue with normal daily activities, unless advised otherwise by your referring practitioner.
Please contact your preferred clinic for all quotes and enquiries. Our friendly customer service team can advise you of any costs involved with your x-ray, including any out-of-pocket costs.
We offer walk in x-ray services at all Alpenglow Australia clinics. No appointment is needed, just bring your valid referral and your Medicare card.
We recommend arranging alternative childcare for the time of your scan, or have another adult accompany you to the appointment to care for your child.
Children are not allowed in the examination room, and there is no supervision available in the waiting area.
Our staff need to maintain full focus during your examination to ensure the best possible care.
